Gov't office wants to slash state boards

A legislative efficiency office has recommended eliminating, or cutting back expenses of, some of the state's 261 boards and commissions, which took up 349,000 hours of paid staff time and spent nearly $12 million in 2007.

The Legislature's Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability last week released a report that recommends, among other actions, eliminating 50% of the state's 80 advisory boards to save up to $90,000 and 4,000 hours of staff time, and cutting 25% of commissions' facilities and refreshment costs to save about $100,000, according to State House News Service.

These boards are created by legislation and comprised of citizens, legislators, and at times, staff. One board, the Maine Athletic Commission, has not had a meeting since 2004, but nonetheless spent $32,845 last year, the news service said.
