Great Falls Construction of Gorham was awarded the contract for a new $4.75 million fire station at 23 School St. in Limerick.

The town held a groundbreaking for the project earlier this month. The event included attendance by community members and fire department and emergency medical service staff, and remarks from town and fire department officials along with Great Falls Construction leadership.

“The process we’ve gone through working with people in Limerick has been outstanding,” Jon Smith, Great Falls’ president and owner, said during his remarks at the event. “We’ve been involved over a couple of years now. We’re thankful we’ve been successful in the RFP process.”

Speaking to the size of the crowd, Smith added, “It’s not very often that you see such a large turnout for a project like this. I think that’s testament to the local support for this project.”

The project is partially funded by $1.8 million secured by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, as part of a total of $36 million for public safety facilities and equipment in 27 Maine communities in fiscal year 2023 appropriations bills.

The Limerick fire station will serve Limerick and several smaller communities, including Cornish and Limington.

“Ensuring that Maine’s finest and bravest have modern facilities and equipment is essential to the delivery of efficient emergency services,” Collins said in a news release. “This funding will replace aging public safety buildings and municipal complexes that are at risk of structural failure and not well suited to house modern equipment.”

She added, “In addition, it will allow communities to upgrade their equipment to better protect first responders and the public. I heard from local officials about how these projects will enhance the well-being of Mainers and improve the delivery of public safety services across the state.”

Said Vincent Pelletier, Limerick’s fire chief, “The Congressional support of our project to build a new fire and EMS station in Limerick will ensure the members of our community will continue to receive fire protection and emergency medical services well into the future. The new facility will have widespread benefits to both Limerick and surrounding communities as we meet the future challenges of providing fire and EMS services to rural western Maine.”
