The Greater Portland Board of Realtors is getting set to break ground for the installation of a steel shade pavilion at the trailhead of the Lavoie Bike Trails, in Gorham’s Lavoie Bike Park.

The board received a $7,500 Placemaking Grant from the National Association of Realtors to donate toward the project.

It also launched a campaign to seek support for the pavilion from its members and affiliate partners, raising an additional $9,050 on top of the grant over the course of a few months.

“We’re proud to support this meaningful project and excited to see how it will benefit the community for years to come,” said Aaron Chadbourne, the board’s president.

The park draws bikers, families and outdoor enthusiasts.

The goal is to create an inviting gathering space where visitors can meet, rest and enjoy the natural surroundings before or after hitting the trails. The park is at 150 Weeks Road.

The town of Gorham approved $50,000 toward the project in its recent budget as a match to private funds, and is still fundraising cash and in-kind donations to complete the project.

It’s expected the project will break ground in a month or so and wrap up this fall.

Donors will be recognized on a commemorative plaque at the site — company sponsors with logos and individuals with their names and affiliated companies, according to a news release.

Donors will also be invited to celebrate at a groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremony upon the pavilion’s completion.

The Placemaking Grant program is designed to strengthen neighborhoods by transforming public spaces into vibrant community places.
