Growers compete for Oxford's final medical marijuana permit
The Oxford Planning Board has received two site plan applications for the cultivation of medical marijuana in the town. Only one of them will be allowed to proceed under current town regulations.
The Advertiser Democrat reported one application is to cultivate marijuana in a 10,000-square-foot building, currently used as a gym, near the Oxford Plains Speedway.
The town’s revised Medical Marijuana Ordinance allows for three medical marijuana permits. Two permits have been issued, and the two current applications are competing for the third permit.
In January, the former Burlington Homes property on Route 26 was sold to a group interested in developing the expansive space for the cultivation of recreational marijuana, the paper reported at that time.
“The building is ideal for indoor recreational marijuana cultivation with its high ceilings and three-phase power,” Joel Pepin, part of the team the purchased the property, told the paper at that time. Pepin said that under the current zoning and permit approval, cultivation of medical marijuana could begin once building construction is completed, and subsequently obtaining a retail cultivation license for the site would allow him to supply retail stores around Maine.
“We will cross the retail bridge as final regulations from the Legislature are outlined,” he told the paper.
