Hannaford data breach suit won't be class action

A federal judge has denied a motion by plaintiffs trying to pursue claims in a class-action lawsuit resulting from a 2007-2008 data breach at Hannaford supermarkets.

The Portland Press Herald reported a U.S. District Court decision in late March denied a motion by four plaintiffs in the case to seek fees for new cards, identity theft insurance and credit monitoring as a class action.

The decision found that those filing the suit, which stemmed from a data breach that exposed nearly 4.2 million customer credit and debit card numbers and led to more than 1,800 fraudulent charges, could not prove total damages on a class-wide basis.
