Hannaford hacker gets 20 years

The hacker who orchestrated the Hannaford data breach that exposed more than 4 million credit and debit cards to potential fraud will spend 20 years in prison.

Albert Gonzalez, 28, of Miami was sentenced Friday to 20 years and a day in prison in a U.S. District Court in Boston, according to the Associated Press. From December 2007 to March 2008, Gonzalez, a one-time federal informant, organized a hack into Scarborough-based Hannaford Bros. Co. that exposed the information of 4.2 million cards and led to 1,800 fraudulent charges. He also hacked into 7-Eleven and New Jersey payment processor Heartland Payment Systems. Gonzalez was also fined $25,000, and could also pay restitution. He pled guilty in December.

The sentence will run concurrent with another 20-year term he received the day before for a data breach on major retailers TJX Cos., BJ's Wholesale Club, Barnes & Noble and OfficeMax. In total, Gonzalez stole tens of millions of card numbers and cost companies, banks and insurers nearly $200 million.
