Maine's largest hiring fair will take place in Augusta this week as the official kickoff to the annual Maine Hire-A-Vet campaign.

Since its inception in 2015, the annual campaign has connected nearly 500 employers with more than 900 veterans who have been hired.

More than 230 employers looking for veterans, military members and civilian job candidates are expected at Thursday's hiring fair, set to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.

The campaign gets underway on Labor Day, Sept. 2, and the goal is for 100 or more employers to hire 100 or more veterans over the course of 100 days.

"Veterans have received valuable training during their military service that can transfer to in-demand civilian skills," said Maine Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman in a news release. "The Maine Hire-A-Vet Campaign helps connect veterans with employers, and employers with the skilled workforce they are looking for."

She also encouraged anyone searching for a next job, or a next employee, to consider participating in this year's campaign.

The Maine Hire-A-Vet Campaign is a partnership between the Maine Department of Labor and its CareerCenters, Boots2Roots, Easter Seals and its Veterans Count program, the Maine National Guard Employment Support Program, Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services, Transition Assistance Advisors, VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, and State Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment.
