Horch Roofing, a Warren-based construction company with 42 employees, is supporting education and training in the trades through an annual scholarship program that this year awarded $3,500 to four recipients.

“We believe it is important to encourage young men and women to study and seize opportunities for great careers within the trades,” Peter Horch, the company's owner and president, said in a news release.

He added: “There are thousands of trade jobs that go unfilled because there are not enough skilled laborers, and those with a trades education can get into great careers with earning opportunities very quickly.”

Horch Roofing last week announced two direct scholarship awards through its Trade School Scholarship Program for 2019.

Justin Secotte of Lincolnville received a $1,000 scholarship. He will study mechanical and electrical engineering at the University of Maine in Orono.

Matthew Scott of Mount Vernon received a $1,000 scholarship. He will study precision machining at Central Maine Community College in Auburn.

Both young men also received monogrammed jackets with the Horch Roofing logo, similar to the ones worn by Horch Roofing crew members.

In addition to the two direct scholarships, Horch Roofing gives two scholarships through the Mid-Coast School of Technology in Rockland, part of Maine's network of Career and Technical Education schools.

This year's winners were Alexis Cutliff of Rockport, who received $500 and will study nursing at Simmons University, and Ashley Curtis of Hope, who received $1,000. She will study automotive collision repair at Northern Maine Community College.

“I am honored and humbled that Horch Roofing has grown so much that I can now ‘pay it forward’ to the community,” said Horch, who attended Waldo County Technical Center in high school before starting his business out of his home in 2003.

“I want local young people to feel encouraged in their pursuit of a trade career. These scholarships are just a small way for Horch Roofing to show that we support their career goals and their future.”

Applications for next year's scholarship program are being accepted until May 1, 2020, via the Horch Roofing website.
