Hospice group gets OK for $7.5M expansion

The Scarborough-based Hospice of Southern Maine is moving forward on a $7.5 million campus project after receiving approval from the town’s planning board last week.

The Forecaster reported the project is still contingent on fundraising but Arlene Wing, the hospice’s executive director, said she hopes the project can be completed by late 2015.

The first phase of the project would include a 1,700-square-foot building to host a combination of offices, training and bereavement counseling areas. A second phase would add 5,000 square feet to that building.

Wing estimates the hospice will need $7.5 million for the project, including purchase of the land, and said that it has already received a $1.5 million donation toward that end. The project would move the hospice from a location on U.S. Route 1 to Lincoln Avenue.
