Hospital could cut OB services

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital may have to close its obstetrics department if it cannot raise $600,000 from private donors by next month.

The hospital has been plagued with budget problems and in January cut 34 positions to avoid bankruptcy, according to the Ellsworth American. At that time, interim CEO Erik Steele considered closing the OB unit, which loses $600,000 a year, but overwhelming support for the service stalled that decision. But Steele told the paper yesterday that unless the hospital can raise $600,000 by March 10, the unit will have to be closed in order to create a break-even operating budget for the next fiscal year, which begins April 1.

Hospital staff have organized a fundraiser on Feb. 28.
