Jay mill announces layoffs

The Wasau Paper mill in Jay will lay off about 40 hourly workers and reduce production, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston.

The company, which is based in Wisconsin, expects to reduce operating hours from 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to five days a week. The mill employs 245 people.

The cutbacks are occurring because of high energy and pulp costs and fewer orders, and are meant to be temporary, the paper reported.
