Katahdin Paper workers return

Furloughed paperworkers are back on the job today at Katahdin Paper Co. in East Millinocket, thanks to some new orders.

Idled since Feb. 6, most of the 140 workers are back at work, revving up the No. 5 paper machine that had been shut down for more than a month due to a decline in orders, reported the Bangor Daily News. Management of the Fraser paper mill, which is owned by Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management, decided to only run the machines when there were orders in hand to avoid creating speculative inventory. About 500 people work at the East Millinocket mill.

Fraser began idling some of its six machines and furloughing workers at its Madawaska mill in January.
