Maine Mall changes direction

The Maine Mall has abandoned its $20 million expansion plans to open a 14-screen movie theater, restaurants and a second food court, according to Current Publishing.

General Growth Properties, which owns the South Portland mall, declined to specify a reason for the scrapped plans. But the Current referred to recent media reports suggesting that Chicago-based General Growth was halting or delaying projects at U.S. shopping centers to turn its attention to international growth as the domestic economy faltered.

Also, Regal Entertainment Group, which was expected to lease the space and open a cinema, opted not to move ahead with its plans after a rival opened a movie theater nearby in February, according to the Current.
