Maine’s 2012 seafood harvest set an all-time record, bringing in an estimated value of $527.7 million, according to preliminary statistics from the state’s Department of Marine Resources.

The Associated Press reported the year marked the second-largest catch by weight since 1950, and surpassed all previous value totals for the harvest. The closest year was 2010, when the harvest garnered $456.8 million.

The elver harvest saw one of the largest year-over-year value increases, rising from a total value of $8 million in 2011 to $38.7 million during the fishery's 10-week season in 2012. Elvers remained the No. 2 catch in the state, by value, just after lobster, which brought in $341 million in 2012.

In national statistics for 2011, Maine brought in the third-highest fishing harvest value after Alaska and Massachusetts. Maine made up 8% of the total value of the U.S. seafood harvest in that year.
