Maine spud harvest: High quality, but average yield

With 85% of Maine potatoes harvested, farmers are expecting an average yield and good-quality spuds from Maine's 59,000 acres of potato cropland.

Don Flannery, executive director of the Maine Potato Board, said in a press release that this year's harvest is in line with a 12-year average of 290 hundredweight per acre.

Flannery said that there were no shortages expected this year due to drought conditions in the Midwest.

But the country's largest potato producing state — Idaho — continues to increase its yield and potato acreage. The Produce News reported that, since 2010, the increase in Idaho's potato acreage exceeds Maine's total acreage of potato farms. Idaho reports having 345,000 acres of potato land this year while Maine has just under 60,000.
