ME sees jump in jobless rate

Maine's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in January was 5%, a one-half percentage point increase from the state's 4.5% jobless rate in January 2007, according to numbers released yesterday by the Maine Department of Labor. In December 2007, the state's jobless rate was 4.9%.

Between January 2007 and January 2008, the total number of seasonally-adjusted nonfarm wage and salary jobs increased by 1,200, with the largest job gains recorded in professional and business services, health care, retail and leisure and hospitality services, according to a press release. Job losses were registered in manufacturing, financial activities and construction.

Meanwhile, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics today said the national jobless rate in February was 4.8%, a decrease from the 4.9% in January. Despite that decrease, the BLS reported the nation lost 63,000 jobs in February, the majority of which were in manufacturing.
