The owner of the idled Katahdin Paper mill in Millinocket is moving forward with plans to restart the mill by installing a biomass boiler.
Toronto-based Brookfield Renewable Power, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management, has submitted a bid to the Maine Public Utilities Commission to supply electricity to Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. and Central Maine Power Co., according to the Bangor Daily News. The company last week submitted a 20-year contract to provide power from a biomass boiler it wants to install at the mill, in the hopes that securing a contract would help the company find a partner to run the biomass operations, Brookfield spokeswoman Julie Smith-Galvin told the paper. She said Brookfield hopes to have negotiations on the contract finished within two months. A PUC spokeswoman declined to comment on the bid.
Brookfield shuttered the mill in September 2008 because of high oil prices, and its restart hinges on the installation of a biomass boiler, Smith-Galvin said. She stressed, however, that a contract with the PUC would not guarantee the mill's reopening, but that the mill would not restart without a biomass boiler.
