New border crossing opens

A border project in the works for a decade came to fruition yesterday when two new ports of entry in Calais and St. Stephen, N.B., opened without a hitch.

Commercial vehicles are expected to reduce crossing times and have more maneuverability at the new crossing station, a 53-acre, $125 million project that took about a year and half to complete, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The new crossing, northwest of the Calais center off Route 1, spans the St. Croix River. The $10 million cost of the bridge project was shared equally by New Brunswick and Maine, according to the paper.
