New Brunswick eyeing casino

While Maine voters this week rejected a racino proposal in Washington County, neighboring New Brunswick is inviting a casino to open somewhere in the Canadian province by 2010, the Associated Press reported.

Maine's neighbor has seen a 25% drop in tourist visits over the past five years, and province leaders believe a casino could boost the tourism industry. Finance Minister Victor Boudreau said he anticipates New Brunswick could make $25 million per year from a privately-owned casino.

But Peter McKenna, a political studies professor at the University of Prince Edward Island, said a PEI racino in Charlottetown is losing about $5 million per year.
