I'm happy to report that Mainebiz has some new faces and several changes on the editorial side.
We have promoted Jim McCarthy to the role of Digital Editor. In more than four years as a Senior Writer at Mainebiz, Jim did an admirable job juggling a range of industries, including health care, forest products and energy. Jim's news judgment and experience have raised the level of Mainebiz's editorial content. He has also worked hard to build his social media presence on Twitter. He has already brought new energy and a heightened news judgment to our newsletters, including the Daily and the Weekly reports. Jim will continue to cover energy, forest products and health care policy, though his focus will be digital coverage.
Laurie Schreiber, who has been a correspondent for Mainebiz for nearly three years, joined Mainebiz as a Staff Writer, effective Feb. 1. Laurie has been a jack of all trades, covering a range of stories. She's demonstrated a willingness to take on new challenges. She has developed real estate sources and helped elevate the Real Estate Insider, transforming the lead story from a simple for-the-record piece about a transaction to a story that gives the background not only about a building that's been sold but also about the buyer and his or her intentions. Laurie, who will continue to work from Mount Desert Island, will also cover the tourism industry.
Senior Writer Renee Cordes, who joins the staff on Feb. 6, comes to us from Brussels, Belgium, where she'd worked as a correspondent for The Deal and The Street. She also worked for Bloomberg in Germany. The Chicago native has both a bachelor's and a master's from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern. After years abroad, she and her husband, a Cleveland native, settled in Portland in October. At Mainebiz, she'll cover a range of topics: banks and financial services, professional services (law, accounting, insurance, wealth management), workforce development and HR, higher education and transportation/infrastructure.
Lori Valigra, who has been a Senior Writer at Mainebiz for four years, is also shifting her duties. She will take over the Food Insider, a weekly newsletter that goes out by subscription. She assumes the role from Tina Fischer, who did a stellar job building the newsletter. Lori will continue to cover innovation, life sciences, international trade, venture capital and financing. Lori, who takes on the title of Senior Writer / Content Specialist, will continue to write the Biz Money column as well. I'd also like to note that for Lori's cover story on the Wellness Connection of Maine, she and photographer Tim Greenway had the the most extensive access of any media team in five years. Great work.
Overall, Mainebiz now offers a broader team and more extensive coverage to the businesses and business issues in Maine.
