New hires

University of Maine System in Orono hired Deborah Hedeen as president and provost of the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Hedeen, who has 27 years of higher education experience, currently serves as provost and vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the University of Montana Western.

MaineHealth hired Susan Ahern as vice president of innovation responsible for planning and development of the MaineHealth Innovation Center. Ahern most recently led a first-in-the-nation statewide program to connect academic and scientific innovators from the 34 Massachusetts research institutes as the director of the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center.

Acorn Engineering Inc., a civil and environmental engineering in Portland, hired Peter Heil as a project manager. Heil most recently served as a project engineer at Milone & MacBroom Inc., which has an office in Portland.

The Advanced Structures and Composites Center at the University of Maine in Orono hired Susan MacKay as a senior program manager. MacKay was founder and CEO of Cerahelix, a maker of a ceramic filtering technology in Orono that reduces water and carbon footprints. In a related move, Cerahelix named Alex Crowell interim CEO. Crowell, a company board member and investor, lives in the Netherlands and is managing director of PureTerra Ventures.

Skelton Taintor & Abbott, a law firm in Lewiston, hired Paul Gosselin, David Dubord and Joan Egdall. All three attorneys previously worked for Gosselin & Dubord PA in Lewiston. Gosselin concentrates his practice in residential and commercial real estate transactional and title work and business organization; Dubord practices in the areas of creditor representation and collections, subrogation, creditor bankruptcy, commercial law, mediation and arbitration; and Egdall practicing in the areas of creditor rights and collections.

Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty in Portland hired Linda Jonas as an agent on its Mount Desert Island team. Jonas’ real estate experience includes 12 years as a licensed appraiser.

Readiness Associates, a consulting firm in Portland that helps clients prepare for natural and man-made disasters, hired Ralph Petti as principal, operations. Petti, a certified risk manager, specializes in business continuity planning for the small- and medium-size business and enterprise markets.

Diversified Communications, an international media company in Portland, hired Jessica Laverriere as human resources administrator, Elizabeth O’Neal as customer service team administrator, Hannah Schnyder as marketing administrator, Dominique Caron as marketing and sales coordinator and Olivia Proctor as customer service administrator. Laverriere was associate marketing specialist at ACI Worldwide; O’Neal, agritourism events manager at Saint Joseph’s College; Schnyder, marketing intern at WEX Inc.; Caron, marketing specialist at Maine Lobster Now; and Proctor is a recent graduate of Plymouth State University.

Promotions

Northern Light Health in Brewer promoted Tim Dentry to president and CEO and April Giard as vice president and CIO. Dentry, who was previously senior vice president and chief operating officer, was scheduled to assume his new duties on April 1 while Giard, who has 30 years of experience in health care, had served as interim vice president and CIO for the past six months.

The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project announced the 2020 recipients of the “Justice Andrew M. ecomaine recognized outstanding efforts in sustainability, waste management and “green living” through its “2020 eco-Excellence Awards.” Overall award recipients included: “Individual eco-Excellence Award,” Amelia Meier, Saco Community Center, and Chris Petitpierre; “Non-Profit eco-Excellence Award,” King Middle School, Portland; and “Business eco-Excellence Award,” GoGo Refill, South Portland. Lynn Frazier testified about the state of the nation’s infrastructure on behalf of the American Society of Civil Engineers in front of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Contracting and Infrastructure in Washington, D.C. Frazier is the director of business development at Sewall, a multi-disciplined consulting firm in Old Town providing services to government, energy and utilities and the forest industry.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized the Presque Isle Utilities District with a “2019 Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Excellence Award” for its work in operating and maintaining its wastewater treatment plant.

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Lewiston, said attorney Benjamin Gideon became a Fellow of The American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in North America. The college is composed of the best of the trial bar from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

The Ellsworth Area Chamber named Stu Marckoon its “2020 Citizen of the Year.” Marckoon has been town administrator for the town of Lamoine for 27 years as well as a morning news anchor on Ellsworth radio station Star 97.7.

Blue Barren Distillery in Camden said it won silver medals for its Harbor Gin and Blueberry Eau de Vie at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

CHA Consulting Inc. in Portland reported that it earned a “National Recognition Award” for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ 53rd annual Engineering Excellence Awards for designing the renovation of the Whittier Field Athletic Complex at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

Androscoggin Land Trust announced it renewed its land trust accreditation joining a network of 400 accredited land trusts across the nation committed to professional excellence and to maintaining the public’s trust in its conservation work.
