New hires

BGA Financial, a financial services company in Portland, hired Jake Knop as a client services associate.

Yokogawa Fluid Imaging Technologies, a life sciences technology company in Scarborough, hired Sigrid Kuebler as marketing director, Eric Gottlieb as engineering director, Austin Daniels as applications scientist and Thomas Parker as manufacturing engineering technician.

Northern Light Mercy Hospital in Portland hired Eliot DeSilva as medical director of hospital medicine; Abigail Sedenka at Northern Light Mercy Ear, Nose, and Throat Care; and Ryan Trosper at Northern Light Mercy Pain Center. Previously, DeSilva was medical director for quality and patient safety at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, N.H.; Sedenka was a clinical audiologist with InterMed PA in Portland; and Trosper was a full-time provider in family medicine at Greater Portland Health and a per diem provider for Northern Light Mercy Walk-In Care.

St.Germain, a specialized environmental, EHS compliance and engineering firm in Westbrook, hired Camden McFadden as an environmental field technician and Christina Walls as office administrator.

Preti Flaherty, a law firm in Portland, hired Ethan Johnson as an associate in the firm’s environmental practice group. Johnson joined the firm following a clerkship at the Yellowstone County District Court in Billings, Mont.

Gorham Savings Bank hired Brian Robinson as senior vice president, director of human resources. Robinson was most recently director of talent strategy and deputy Title IX coordinator at Bowdoin College.

Lake Stewards of Maine, a nonprofit in Auburn, hired Adam Zemans as executive director. Zemans is an environmental and not-for-profit lawyer.

Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth hired Taylor Mace as senior communications and marketing specialist. Mace was previously community engagement coordinator for Island Readers & Writers in Southwest Harbor and a reporter at the Mount Desert Islander and the Ellsworth American.

Thompson Financial Group in Presque Isle hired E.J. Huck as CFO. Huck was previously deputy director at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Limestone.

Fontaine Family, an Auburn real estate firm, hired LeAnn McNally as a sales agent in Auburn.

Norway Savings Bank hired Jay Kiel as vice president, mortgage loan officer in Bethel. Kiel has 30 years of banking experience.

RE/MAX Shoreline hired Savannah Fields as office manager in Portland. Fields was formerly donor events and stewardship coordinator at the Portland Museum of Art.

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Lewiston, hired Charles Hehmeyer as a medical malpractice and personal injury attorney. Hehmeyer, who has 30 years of experience, was previously a partner at Raynes Lawn Hehmeyer in Philadelphia.

CourseStorm, a software firm in Orono, hired Nicole Lyons as marketing manager and Tricia Cooke as an account executive in its sales department.

Promotions

Norway Savings Bank promoted Mike Grass to vice president, market manager in Bethel. Grass, who has been with the bank for five years, will also oversee the Norway and South Paris branches.

Central Maine Power in Augusta promoted Peter Cohen to vice president of regulatory issues. Cohen, a 17-year veteran of the company’s regulatory staff, was most recently senior director of regulatory.

Merrill Lynch in Portland promoted April Ylvisaker Tardiff to resident director.

Appointments

Pierce Atwood Trusts & Estates partner Barbara Wheaton was appointed chair of the Professional Ethics Commission of the Maine Board of Bar Overseers. The commission serves to render formal and informal written advisory opinions to the court, board, grievance commission, bar counsel and members of the Maine bar involving the interpretation and application of the Maine Rules of Professional Conduct.

Bar Harbor Bankshares, the parent company of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, announced that it was recognized as one of “America’s Best Banks” in the small bank category for Maine by Newsweek.

The Maine Development Foundation in Hallowell named its 2021 Champion Award winners. The “2021 Champion of Education and Workforce Development” award went to Strengthen LA; “2021 Champion of Rural Economic Development,” Andy Hamilton, economic development attorney at Eaton Peabody and a member of the FOR/Maine Coalition Steering Committee; “2021 William F. King, Jr., Downtown Champion Award,” Greg Paxton, retired executive director of Maine Preservation; “2021 ICL Distinguished Alum Award,” Shenna Bellows, Maine Secretary of State and a member of ICL’s Xi Class; “2021 Kenneth M. Curtis Leadership Award,” Kevin Hancock, chairman and CEO of Hancock Lumber and a member of Leadership Maine’s Lambda Class; and “2021 President’s Award,” Maine Development Foundation staff.

RE/MAX Shoreline in Portland said Stephen Peck was recognized by RE/MAX LLC as the No. 3 “Individual RE/MAX Agent in Maine” and Peter Hawkes as the No. 4 “Individual RE/MAX Agent in Maine” in August. In addition, the Portland Maine Living Team was recognized as the No. 4 “RE/MAX Team in Maine” in August.

Down East, a magazine published in Camden, was named “Magazine of the Year” by International Regional Magazine Association.

The Maine district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration recognized its top Maine lenders in several categories including Bangor Savings Bank, who approved 47, 7(a) loans and 11, 504 3rd Party loans totaling over $12 million, making the bank the overall “Leading SBA Bank Lender in Maine;” Deere Employee Credit Union was the “Leading SBA Credit Union in Maine” after approving six 7(a) loans and two 504 3rd Party loans totaling over $1.2 million in Maine; Granite State Development Corp. was “Maine’s Leading Certified Development Co.” in both numbers and total dollars, approving 86, 504 loans for nearly $38 million in Fiscal Year 2021; and Coastal Enterprises Inc. was “Maine’s Leading SBA Microlender” with 23 loan approvals totaling $390,000 in Fiscal Year 2021. In addition, the administration presented “SBA District Director Awards” to Northern Maine Development Commission, Kennebunk Savings Bank and Evergreen Credit Union for the efforts taken by these lenders to increase the use of SBA programs in their lending portfolios, as well as their efforts to increase access to programs like the Paycheck Protection Program.

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust presented its “Chairman’s Award” to Steve Gurin, senior vice president and director of community banking, and Joe Schmitt, senior vice president and director of marketing. In addition, recipients of the bank’s “2021 Emerging Leader Award” were Jayme Demers, vice president, retail delivery strategic initiatives; Alison DiPaola, vice president, human resources manager; Raelene Garrow, vice president, retail lending operations manager; Zac Riitano, vice president, portfolio manager; and Bryan Sanford, vice president, senior investment officer at Charter Trust Co., a subsidiary of the bank. The bank also said it was recognized as one of “America’s Best Banks” by Newsweek in the small bank category for Maine.

The American Public Health Association recognized Maine Public Health Association as the recipient of its “2021 Outstanding Affiliate of the Year Award.”

Northern Light Orthopedics at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor was recognized as a “Star Performer” by the American Orthopaedic Association’s Own the Bone program, which helps provide secondary (after fracture) osteoporosis care to prevent future fractures, pain and suffering and cost that comes with these injuries. The medical center also said it received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get with the Guidelines — Stroke Gold Plus with Honor Roll Quality Achievement Award” as well as being named to the “Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.”

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce honored the late Harold Alfond, philanthropist and Dexter Shoe Co. founder and the late David Flanagan, former executive chairman of the Board of Directors of Central Maine Power and AVANGRID Inc. at its annual dinner.

Tedford Housing, a homeless services provider based in Brunswick, honored community members, businesses and long-time staff members at its Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony. “The Scooty Brownell Award” was awarded posthumously to Judy Montgomery, who was a longtime member of the board of directors; “The Margit Cook Award” was presented to Tedford’s team of Warm Thy Neighbor Volunteers: Karren Cowing, Irene Martin, Dorothy Moody, Marilyn Sinskie, Susan Wygal and the late Sally Loving; “The Tedford Home Award” went to George and Kate Cook of Cooke’s Maple Farm of Brunswick; and Kay Wilson, adult shelter manager, and Giff Jamison, director of programs, were both honored for 15 years of employment with the organization.

EXIT Realty New England recognized associates during its 2021 EXIT Realty Corp. International Virtual Awards. Maine based “Silver” winners were Elias Thomas III, Shapleigh and Daniel Hickman, Bridgton. “Bronze” winners included: Sherry James, Shapleigh; Jason Vennard, Stephanie Tremblay and Pamela Coyne, Wells; and Steve Gourley, Bridgton.

College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor was listed first and Bates College in Lewiston fifth in The Princeton Review’s 2022 Guide to Green Colleges. The guide ranks schools on recycling and conservation programs, use of renewable energy, reliance on local food systems, waste diversion and more.
