New hires

The Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce hired Tawni Whitney as executive director. Whitney is the founder of Freeport Friends, an organization to help families in Freeport who are facing crisis and support Freeport seniors age in place.

Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington hired Linda Cota as a physician at Franklin Health Livermore Falls Family Practice, Kristen Mazoki as a doctor at Franklin Health Behavioral Services and Leslie White as clinical dietitian.

Verrill, a law firm in Portland, hired Martin Topol as of a member of its litigation and trial group. Topol represents corporate and individual clients across the spectrum of civil and criminal matters at all stages of litigation, from case initiation through trial and appeal.

The Office of the Secretary of State hired Jerome Bennett as deputy secretary of state for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Bennett was previously grants financial manager at Preble Street.

Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ in Portland hired Adam MacDonald as executive director. MacDonald most recently served as marketing director for Portland Downtown.

The Mitchell Institute, a nonprofit founded by former U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell with the goal of improving college outcomes for Maine students, hired Jared Cash as president and CEO, effective Jan. 1. Cash is currently vice president for enrollment and marketing at the University of Southern Maine.

Skowhegan Savings hired Tara Russell as a vice president and commercial lender. Russell has 23 years of financial and customer service industries experience.

The Dempsey Center in Lewiston hired Cara Valentino as CEO and president. Valentino, who is a certified executive coach and organizational development consultant, most recently was director of consulting at the Clearing in Washington D.C.

MedRhythms, a Portland-based digital health startup, hired Sabrina Taylor as head of clinical trials. Taylor previously served as director of clinical studies for the Brain and Spinal Injury Center at the University of California-San Francisco, based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty in Portland hired Renee Burch as a Realtor. Prior to entering the real estate profession, Burch founded and operated a speech and language pathology practice in London, England.

Fontaine Family, an Auburn real estate firm, hired Dawn Dubuc as a sales agent.

Piper Shores, a nonprofit lifecare retirement community in Scarborough, hired Corey Seigel as director of food and nutrition. Seigel most recently served as executive chef at Meadow Ridge in Redding, Conn.

Promotions

Geiger, a promotional products company in Lewiston, promoted Joline Janosco-Rider to key customer specialist floater in Total Care Service, Nathaniel Bullock to compliance manager in Risk Management, Crystal Coolong to order processing supervisor in Total Care, Blaine Martineau to sales use tax specialist lead in Corporate Finance and Allen Whitman to customer care supervisor in Crestline.

UScellular promoted Joel Parlin to sales manager in Auburn. Parlin was a retail sales manager in Farmington.

Appointments

Harpswell Capital Advisors in New Gloucester added Emily McComb to its advisory board. McComb’s experience includes time at Fidelity and Bain as well as her academic focus at Harvard Business School.

Greg Cox, portfolio administrator at R.M. Davis in Portland, was appointed to the University of Southern Maine’s new Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisory Board. Cox will focus on diversity in athletics.

Central Maine Human Resource Association elected Barbara Lovejoy, director of human resources at OTELCO, as president of its board of directors for the 2022-2023 term year. Achievements

The Maine Crafts Association named Marian Baker and Tim McCreight as 2021 “MCA Maine Craft Artist Award” recipients.

Family Tree Magazine, a genealogy periodical published by Yankee Publishing, named Maine Memory Network among its “75 Best State Websites for Genealogy” in its revised list for 2021, featuring the best state-based resources for family historians to research their family tree.

Preti Flaherty, a law firm in Portland, was named among the “2022 Best Law Firms” by the U.S. News – Best Lawyers rankings. The firm had 13 of its Maine-based areas of law recognized in the rankings leading to the honor and three of its attorneys were named “Lawyer of the Year.”

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Lewiston, was named to the “2022 Best Law Firms” by the U.S. News – Best Lawyers rankings, earning recognition in personal injury and product liability litigation categories.

Murray Plumb & Murray, a law firm in Portland, was named a “Tier 1 Metropolitan Best Law Firm” in eight practice areas by U.S. News – Best Lawyers in 2022. The firm also received Tier 2 and Tier 3 recognition in 10 additional practice areas.

Sarah Ruef-Lindquist, a financial advisor at Allen Insurance and Financial in Camden, presented on the topic of “Pandemics and Planned Giving” at the Northern New England chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals annual conference. The agency also said Leann Cailler, a personal insurance account executive, earned the “Safeco Insurance Award of Distinction” and was named a producer of the year for 2021.

Pierce Atwood, a law firm in Portland, said that it received 36 Metropolitan Tier 1 rankings for its Maine-based practices from U.S. News – Best Lawyers in 2022.

Geiger, a promotional products distributor in Lewiston, named Trish Whitlock, Julie Vickers, the team of John Paine and John Plummer and the U.S. Decorations Team (Amy Pacanza-Rogers, Kevin Lowell, Sandy Russell, Zach Pushee, Megan Creney, Ryan Getchell, Pete Letourneau and Laura Slyk) as “3rd Quarter Geiger Star Awards” recipients.

Franklin Memorial Hospital, Maine Medical Center, Mid Coast Hospital, Pen Bay Medical Center and Southern Maine Health Care each received a fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade of ‘A.’ The Leapfrog Group, an independent safety and quality evaluator, grades general hospitals across the country every six months based on more than 30 national performance measures.

Adam Routhier, a project manager at Zachau Construction in Freeport, completed his PHIUS Certified Builders training for a Portland Housing project on Front Street that, once completed, will provide 60 low-income housing units.

The U.S. Department of Labor named Career Systems Development Corp. and Penobscot Job Corps Center in Bangor, Ecocor in Searsmont and Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway in Bangor as “2021 HIRE Vets Medallion Award recipients.” The award recognizes employers across the nation who exemplify a commitment to employing U.S. military veterans.

Tabitha Washburn, supervisor of patient access at MaineGeneral Health in Waterville, received the “Patriot Award” from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The award recognizes individual managers for their steadfast support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

Marina Holdings LLC, the holding company for Yarmouth Boat Yard, Moose Landing Marina and Freedom Boat Club of Maine, was listed ninth in Boating Industry’s Top 100 listing of best dealers in North America for a second straight year.

Central Maine Growth Council and KV Connect presented its “2021 Emerging Leader of the Year Award” to Katie Brann, chair of KV Connect and a financial advisor at Golden Pond Wealth Management in Waterville.
