Offshore tidal power expansion set for 2014

Following deployment of a trial tidal power project in Cobscook Bay, Ocean Renewable Power Co. has announced plans for a 24-unit underwater turbine array near the Bay of Fundy.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the company is looking to complete the new project by 2014, building on the pilot project that began generating power 12 weeks ago.

Currently, the test turbine is out of the water for an inspection required by the project's $10 million federal Department of Energy grant. Company officials told the newspaper the inspection has not revealed any surprises about the turbine that can generate enough energy to power 20 to 25 homes.
