It may be too early to test the waters there, but Ogunquit’s seashore is one of the top 10 beaches in the U.S., according to travel website Tripadvisor.

Ogunquit Beach ranked No. 7 among recipients of the Tripadvisor Traveler’s Choice Best of the Best Awards for Beaches, named on Tuesday.

Ogunquit has often been a contender in the annual rankings, but last year was No. 15. This year, the York County beach was the only spot in the Northeast to make the top 10, whose other honorees comprised five beaches in Hawaii, two in Florida, and one each in California and Oregon.

Tripadvisor bases the awards on the quality and quantity of beach reviews and ratings from site visitors, gathered over a 12-month period. With many travelers under lockdown, the 2021 awards also took into account visitors who “saved” information about the beaches.

Florida's St. Pete Beach ranked No. 1 in the 2021 list. Of the 25 best U.S. beaches, Florida and Hawaii dominated the list, accounting for 15. In a similar worldwide ranking, St. Pete ranked No. 5, and Australia's Whitehaven Beach was No. 1.

Tripadvisor also reported an optimistic forecast for Ogunquit and other beach communities: 60% of travelers are “very likely” to take a beach trip this year despite the pandemic, according to a survey of 2,300 consumers in six countries.
