ORPC applies to test tidal project

Ocean Renewable Power Co. is seeking federal approval to test its full-scale tidal turbine generator in the waters off Eastport.

The Portland-based company has submitted its pilot license application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to test its 150-kilowatt turbine in Cobscook Bay, according to a press release. Last year, the company successfully completed beta testing of its TidGen Power System. Should FERC issue the license, the full-size turbine will become the first grid-connected tidal energy project in the state, and potentially the first in the country.

The company recently formed a subsidiary to explore tidal power possibilities in Nova Scotia, and also has projects in the works in Alaska.
