The annual Peaks to Portland swim, benefiting programming for kids, will take place this Saturday on Casco Bay.

The 2.4-mile open-water event, which goes from Peaks Island to Portland's East End Beach, aims to raise over $175,000 for YMCA Southern Maine programs.

The event will host more than 240 swimmers, 150 kayakers and 60 volunteers.

The funding will help ensure no child is turned away due to family finances, supporting summer camps, early childhood education, and water safety programs that serve thousands across the YMCA's three locations in Biddeford, Portland and Freeport.

Last year, the event raised $113,000 for local children.

"Every stroke these swimmers take represents their commitment to ensuring no child is turned away from life-changing programs," Meaghan Woodsome, chief administrative officer for the YMCA of Southern Maine, told Mainebiz in an email.

"Through their fundraising efforts, they're directly investing in the futures of kids and families throughout Southern Maine — and our entire community is here to support them."

The event will take place on Saturday, July 26, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The actual starting time is 8:30 a.m. The first competitors are expected to arrive at East End Beach by 9:20 a.m.
