Planners OK $110M Thompson’s Point master plan
The Portland Planning Board gave unanimous approval Tuesday to a master plan to make a former industrial site at Thompson’s Point into an arts, entertainment and office development.
The Portland Press Herald reported the project’s developers still need city approval for subdivision and site plans, but the vote sets in motion the developer’s overall concept for the 30-acre parcel.
Developer Chris Thompson told the newspaper initial site work for the $110 million project will start Thursday.
That concept includes a 2,500-person event center and arena proposed as a new home for the Maine Red Claws basketball team and the country’s first accredited circus school, the Circus Conservatory of America.
Key to the master plan’s approval was a revision to align with Maine Department of Transportation limits on traffic in and out of the development. The newspaper reported that developers eliminated one of three proposed restaurants and converted one of two office buildings into a residential tower, making for two residential towers on the site that can be as tall as 120 feet.
The newspaper reported other uses detailed in the plan include a hotel, a cultural center, a public trail and a boat launch.
