Plum Creek plan moves forward

Plum Creek officials have agreed to most of the changes proposed by state land use regulators to amend the company's huge development plan for the Moosehead Lake region.

The Land Use Regulation Commission is close to wrapping up its review of Plum Creek's proposal to build 975 house lots and two large resorts around the lake, and will make a final vote in late summer or early fall, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Plum Creek has agreed, per LURC's recommended changes, to sell roughly 300,000 acres for land preservation and donate 95,000 acres -- 4,000 more than in the original plan -- to offset development impacts. It will also cut by half the number of house lots proposed for Long Lake. The commission did not, however, reduce the number of house lots or scope of development near Lily Bay, as Plum Creek critics had requested.
