Poland Spring triumphs in court case

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has upheld a lower court's decision to allow Poland Spring to extract water from a pumping station in Dallas Plantation.

The Rangeley Crossroads Coalition, a local alliance of local officials, businesses and nonprofits, has been battling a 2006 decision by the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission to permit Poland Spring's parent company, Nestle Waters North America Inc., to draw up to 184 million gallons of water annually from Rangeley Lake's aquifers, according to the Sun Journal. The company expects up to 100 tanker-truck trips daily to transport the water to a bottling facility elsewhere.

Although the majority of justices found Nestle's use permissible, two justices, Chief Justice Leigh Ingalls Saufley and Jon D. Levy, dissented, the paper reported.
