Pratt & Whitney gets $592M defense contract

Pratty & Whitney, a Connecticut-based defense contractor that has a facility in North Berwick, has been awarded a $592 million contract with the Pentagon to build fighter plane engines.

Reuters reported that Pratt & Whitney will work on 36 engines for the F-35 fighter plane constructed by Lockheed Martin Corp. The work could be followed up with a similar contract for additional engines, which would amount to more than $1 billion.

Pratt & Whitney, which is owned by United Technologies Corp., renewed its commitment to stay in North Berwick in 2009, when it signed a new 10-year lease.
