Quick turnaround: Portland winery will take over former Urban Farm Fermentory space

Alexis Wells Blue Lobster Urban Winery will be moving to 200 Anderson St. in Portland.

Blue Lobster Urban Winery announced on Monday that it will move across a Portland street into the former home of Urban Farm Fermentory.

After seven years at 219 Anderson St., Blue Lobster Urban Winery said the Urban Farm location at 200 Anderson St. will offer more room to expand. The winery produces wines and ciders that are packaged in cans to make them convenient to take anywhere.

The new site will allow for expanded production, a larger tasting room, more parking and outdoor seating.

“With so much new room for activities, you can expect that we will be introducing new weekly events, an expanded wine cocktail program and other options we hope to announce soon,” Blue Lobster said in a social media post.

Blue Lobster will be open at the former location through March. 22 Thursday through Sunday. The business will be closed for an extended break for the move and renovations.

An opening date for their new spot has not been determined.

Urban Farm Fermentory announced via social media last week that the business would pour its last drinks over the weekend. To celebrate its 14 years in East Bayside, the nightspot went out with a bang, serving up two days of music, art and the usual variety of fermented beverages.

(It's unclear whether Urban Farm will continue its wholesale production at the East Bayside site, and efforts to reach founder Eli Cayer were unsuccessful.)

Neighborhood growth

In recent years, the East Bayside neighborhood has seen a surge in nightspots, including craft breweries, wineries and distilleries.

Starting with Rising Tide Brewing Co., the growth has included Blue Lobster, Austin Street Brewing, Lone Pine Brewing Co., Three of Strong Spirits, Goodfire Brewing, Hi-Fidelity Brewing, Apres, Belleflower Brewing Co.  and, most recently, Orange Bike Brewing.

At one time, the neighborhood earned the moniker "Yeast Bayside" for all the brewing and fermenting activity, though the area has evolved to include other retailers. East Bayside is also home to Coffee By Design, Tandem Coffee, galleries and retailers.
