Saco Bay dock proposal runs aground

A proposal to build a dock for cruise and ferry ships in Saco Bay has run aground now that Saco city administrators say the developer's rights to the property have expired.

Last fall, the Saco City Council approved an option and a 25-year lease agreement to allow Bill Danton to build 200-by-400-foot docking platform adjacent to the Old Orchard Beach Pier in waters believed are owned by the city of Saco. But when Danton attempted to make a $10,000 payment on the lease this fall, City Administrator Rick Michaud told Danton that the lease had never been properly validated and the option on the property had not been renewed 365 days after it was approved, rendering it invalid, according to Current Publishing.

Danton told the paper that he plans to sue the city of Saco, arguing that the lease is valid and that the option did not expire before he attempted to make the lease payment.
