Second contract awarded for Kittery shipyard work
The U.S. Navy has issued another $38 million contract for modernization work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. The news comes on the heels of a similar award for energy and structural repairs.
The Navy has awarded Massachusetts-based Environmental Chemical Corp. a second contract, this time to renovate Building 174, the West End Waterfront Support Facility, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, and Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire. The building's interior will be demolished and rebuilt, with work expected to be complete by December 2014. Earlier this month, Environmental Chemical Corp. won a contract to make energy-efficient and structural repairs to Building 178, which houses consolidated submarine operations, with work also wrapping up by December 2014.
The Navy last year said it would invest approximately $100 million during fiscal year 2012 to modernize the shipyard after a November 2010 report by the Government Accountability Office found that it, along with three other shipyards, were in need of upgrades.
