State workers approve contract

The union representing 15,000 state employees approved a new two-year contract that restores merit pay increases, which have been frozen for some workers for four years. The state and its employees’ union have been without a contract for two years.

The Kennebec Journal reported the new contract, in effect from July 1 to June 30, 2015, includes a 1% wage increase for workers that takes effect in September and it restores merit increases for employees with anniversary dates before June 30, 2014.

The paper reported that Gov. Paul LePage praised the new contract for cutting what he saw as wasteful perks, including allowances for landline telephone service for some workers and paid leave for workers to attend union conventions.
