Tax critics file referendum application

A coalition of businesses is rallying to repeal a tax hike on soda, beer and wine lawmakers adopted to pay for the state's Dirigo Health program.

The coalition, called Fed Up With Taxes, on Friday submitted an application with the state to place a referendum on the tax hikes on the November ballot, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. The coalition -- which includes the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Maine Restaurant Association and Maine Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association, among others -- objects to the fact that the tax increases were approved without any public hearing at the end of the legislative session.

In order for the referendum to appear on the November ballot, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap must accept the application, and the coalition must collect 55,087 signatures by July 17, according to the paper.
