Unemployment rises slightly in August

Maine’s unemployment rate rose slightly from July to August but the number of out-of-work job seekers remains lower than one year ago.

The latest figures from the Maine Department of Labor estimate the unemployment rate at 7.0% for August, up slightly from 6.9% in July. That estimate for August is lower than the jobless rate of 7.3% recorded one year ago. Since the start of 2013, officials estimate there are 1,700 fewer job seekers who are unable to find work.

The department said in a press release that the fluctuation is likely due to methods that give estimates a tendency to move in one direction for several months and then to change course.

Compared to the rest of the region in August, Maine showed a lower unemployment rate than Massachusetts (7.2%), Rhode Island (9.1%) and Connecticut (8.1%) while coming in higher than New Hampshire (5.0%) and Vermont (4.6%).
