Out of 140 senior living communities in Maine evaluated in the latest annual barometer by U.S. News & World Report, the top five were as follows: Enclave of Scarborough, Dirigo Pines in Orono, Atria Kennebunk and Huntington Common in Kennebunk and Bay Square at Yarmouth.
First launched in 2009, the annual report evaluates some 15,000 nursing homes nationwide, assessing both short-term and long-term care models.
Senior living communities were assessed based on surveys measuring resident or family satisfaction with safety, caregiving, activities, management, staff, food, value and other aspects of daily life.
A separate ranking of nursing homes assessed 81 Maine facilities, six of which received a rating of 5 out of 5: Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta; Horizons Living and Rehabilitation Center in Brunswick; Maine Veterans’ Homes in Augusta, Caribou and South Paris; and Aroostook Medical Center in Mars Hill.
Ratings for nursing homes were determined by assessing nurse staffing levels, patient outcomes, and whether steps known to prevent harm and improve health were incorporated into daily routines.
U.S. News also announced updates to its methodology to enhance accuracy and usefulness for residents and families. For 2025, the ratings now average two years of short-term rehabilitation data for more reliable measures of emergency room visits and hospitalizations, mirroring last year’s change for long-term care.
New metrics for both care types include staff retention, based on the percentage of employees who remain after one year, and a health deficiencies score that accounts for the number, scope and severity of inspection findings.
According to the report, one in eight Americans over age 85 resides in a nursing home, and nearly one-third spend time in one during their final months of life.
