VC fund honors three Maine firms

The Small Enterprise Growth Fund, Maine's venture capital fund, recently honored three of its 19 portfolio companies for exemplary performance in leadership, achievement and public benefit.

  • Certify LLC, a Portland-based company that provides online expense management tools compatible with mobile technologies, received the Leadership Team Award for its emphasis on transparent and complete communications with stakeholders, timely reporting and quality of key performance indicators.
  • Bourgeois Guitars LLC (aka Pantheon Guitars), based in an 1860s-era mill in Lewiston, received the Achievement Award for increasing its productivity, sales and revenues with innovative product design, distribution and promotion of its acoustic guitars created by master luthier Dana Bourgeois.
  • Looks Gourmet Seafood Inc., makers of Bar Harbor and Atlantic brands of soups, chowders and other Maine seafood made with natural ingredients, received the Public Benefit Award for its role as an anchor employer in Down East Maine that is involved in community affairs while continuing to grow its market share in several specialty food categories.

“The awards obviously were given for different reasons but the common denominator is that these three companies demonstrate management practices that we believe lead to success,” John Burns, SEGF'S fund manager, told Mainebiz. “We believe others can learn from the awardees' experiences as they grow their own enterprises.” James McCarthy
