General Dynamics Bath Iron Works is a full-service shipyard specializing in the design, building and support of complex surface combatants for the U.S. Navy. BIW’s rich history reflects a continuous pattern of innovation, new technology and process improvements. We are shipfitters, welders, electricians, pipefitters, designers, naval architects, engineers, ship operators and business professionals. We come from all over the U.S. and from all walks of life and each day we contribute to the defense of our nation.
Products: BIW designed and continues to build DDG 51-class Arleigh Burke destroyers, the Navy’s longest-running shipbuilding program. The shipyard is also responsible for modernization and lifecycle support of ships already deployed in the fleet.
Markets/customers: U.S. Navy.
Career/job opportunities: With almost 7,000 employees, the shipyard is often compared to a small city and supports its own security force, fire department, medical facility and finance department. We are hiring for positions in all types of roles throughout our business, including surveyors, electricians, engineers, firefighters, designers, and maintenance mechanics.
We also offer apprenticeship opportunities for highly motivated students interested in shipbuilding careers. BIW Apprentices earn while they learn through both academic and on-the-job training that, upon completion, provides an Associate of Science degree, that could also lead to a full bachelor’s or master’s degree. The school offers programs in shipbuilding trades, marine design, and production planning.
Company Benefits: BIW offers employees a full suite of benefits including generous health insurance, retirement benefits and compensated time off.
Internship program: Yes, we have an extensive internship program that places college students in areas throughout the shipyard. Many of our interns have gone on to become valued full-time employees. We also have a Professional Development Program and Engineering Development Program for recent college graduates.
Community engagement: BIW values corporate citizenship and partners with a number of local organizations including area food programs. The shipyard also is a founding member of the United Way of Midcoast Maine and employees annually raise several hundred thousand dollars to support area programs.
Sustainability: BIW has undertaken several initiatives. Infrastructure efforts include supporting a major solar farm in Maine enabling more sustainable power and building new structures in the shipyard to withstand rising sea levels. BIW also has several efforts focused on greener commutes, including subsidizing shuttle and commuter bus use by our employees and working with GO MAINE to encourage employee ride sharing. BIW is actively engaged in efforts to protect the Kennebec River and to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. Each year BIW recycles thousands of pounds of scrap wood and steel.

“The best part about this job is watching the ship come together: coordinating with all the trades to make it all become one. Seeing antennas installed, combat spaces loaded out, and bulkheads being put up is what makes this job so rewarding. We do amazing things here and I am truly honored to be a part of it all.”
