U.S. News & World Report has released its annual rankings of the country’s best hospitals, and Maine health care facilities are again on the list.

Maine Medical Center, the Portland-based flagship hospital of the MaineHealth system, was ranked as the No. 1 hospital in the state. Tied for No. 2 were a pair of hospitals in the Northern Light Health system — Eastern Maine Medical Center, of Bangor, and Mercy Hospital, of Portland.

This year’s U.S. News study is the seventh consecutive ranking in which MMC has been named a “best regional hospital,” the medical center said in a news release Tuesday. The MMC gynecology program also ranked No. 34 in the country, tied with NYU Langone Hospitals in New York City and the University of Chicago Medical Center.

MMC earned a “high performing” rating in three adult medical specialties and nine procedures or conditions. Eastern Maine earned a “high performing” rating in four procedures or conditions, while Mercy received that rating in three.

“High performing” is the highest rating U.S. News awards, a reflection that the hospital ranks in the top 10% nationwide for that clinical area, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes.

U.S. News generates hospital rankings by evaluating data on nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide. The complete rankings are available here.
