With the successful completion of an outdoor fitness court in Lewiston and a second in Hampden, Lewiston-based Community Health Options has teamed up again with the National Fitness Campaign to build more courts around Maine.

National Fitness Campaign offers a concept called Fitness Court as a trademarked, seven-movement outdoor workout system.

Applications for a share of $500,000 in grants are open to local governments and educational entities to support new communities interested in community wellness programs and free high-performance workouts, with the goal of reaching thousands of people.

Community Health Options, a nonprofit, member‐led health insurer and plan administrator, partnered last year with National Fitness Campaign, a wellness consulting firm founded in San Francisco, Calif. in 1979  to offer grant funding, project management and master planning services to cities, schools and sponsors to build healthy communities.

he 2022 campaign yielded six public-private investment partners resulting in more than $400,000 in funding that created new, healthy infrastructure. The city of Lewiston opened Maine’s first Health Options Fitness Court in September 2022, near the nonprofit’s headquarters in Simard-Payne Park.

The town of Hampden launched the second Fitness Court at the VFW Park and Field and has plans to incorporate the Fitness Court into its teen and adult wellness programming.

The outdoor gym features seven-movement workouts and digital coaching on a free Fitness Court app. There are also opportunities for free fitness classes through a program with local trainers.

The 2023 application process is open to municipalities, schools and other organizations that own accessible public space. Grant recipients will receive a wellness toolkit, education and design resources to assist in planning, funding and launching their outdoor Fitness Court and community wellness campaign.
