Amtrak extension gets $3M boost

The extension of the Amtrak Downeaster train from Portland to Brunswick currently under way is getting another boost from the feds.

Maine will receive another $3.3 million to help fund the $38.3 million project, scheduled for completion in 2012, on top of the $35 million the state has already received, according to The Associated Press. The new funding comes from $1.2 billion the U.S. Department of Transportation originally awarded to Wisconsin and Ohio, but those states have backed out of their high-speed rail projects, so the DOT redistributed the funds to 13 other states.

In January, the federal government doled out $8 billion for high-speed passenger rail projects around the country.
