Andro mill cited for permit violations

Verso Paper says it has made changes to address recent environmental permit violations at its Androscoggin Mill in Jay.

The mill violated town and state water discharge and landfill licenses in incidents that occurred between August 2007 and Jan. 9, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. On Nov. 6, about 2,400 gallons of sludge traveled over the ground into a nearby stream, and last summer treated discharge increased the river's temperature by less than one-tenth of a degree, the paper reported. Two leaks from the mill's landfill were also reported after heavy rain and melting snow this winter.

The mill has repaired the leaky line that caused the stream pollution infraction, and has instituted or is currently drafting monitoring plans to address all of the violations.
