Lowe's targets Belfast again

Lowe's Home Centers yesterday filed an application with the city of Belfast to build a three-store shopping center, the home improvement store's second attempt to locate in the city.

North Carolina-based Lowe's wants to build an 180,000-square-foot shopping center on an 80-acre site on Searsport Avenue, according to the Bangor Daily News. The proposal calls for a 175,000-square-foot Lowe's store and two separate 2,500-square-foot stores, whose tenants were not identified. The application will be considered at the planning board's Feb. 13 meeting, the paper reported.

The city council last year rejected the company's request for a zoning change on a site on Route 3, citing concerns that a Lowe's store would threaten existing local home improvement stores, such as Viking Lumber Co., according to the Daily News. The Searsport Avenue site currently is zoned for shopping centers of three stores or more.
