Another 79 laid off at Barber Foods in Portland

Another 79 employees at Barber Foods in Portland will be laid off as part of a restructuring followings its acquisition by Cincinnati-based AdvancePierre Foods. Since buying Barber Foods last summer, AdvancePierre has cut the company’s work force by 232.

The company said yesterday it will lay off employees from the St. John Street production plant, where technological improvements have made packaging work more efficient, according to the Portland Press Herald. Affected workers will receive 60 days’ notice and a week of severance for every year they were employed. The company last June laid off 82 employees because of consolidation in its production lines, and then laid off another 71 in October, when AdvancePierre moved some of the plant’s work to another facility in Oklahoma.

The plant still has more than 300 employees.
