Anthem: Data breach impacted 531,000 Mainers

The data breach that hit insurance company Anthem Inc. and its subsidiaries earlier this year impacted 531,000 Mainers, the company confirmed on Wednesday.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine told WGME-13 that the company finished sending the last batch of notification letters at the beginning of this week. Anthem has been informing current and past customers that hackers stole their personal information, including social security numbers and addresses, since announcing the breach in early February. The company is offering free identity protection and credit monitoring services to anyone affected.

The news station noted that Anthem is facing more than 75 class action lawsuits in federal court, including one seeking $5 million in damages from a man in Brunswick.
