Backyard Farms on track for Jan. production

The Madison-based Backyard Farms is on track to have its tomatoes back on shelves in January after nearly six months of crop problems.

Mike Aalto, a spokesman for Backyard Farms, said in an email that the company will hold a celebration event for the new crop Jan. 8.

The company this summer scrapped a crop of tomatoes for a whitefly invasion and then tossed out yet another crop propagated by a third-party grower that it said did not meet quality standards. The delays led to furloughs of all but necessary personnel at the greenhouse farm from late August to October. The company typically produces more than 27 million pounds of tomatoes a year and is Madison's second-largest employer.
