Bangor health org. joins HealthInfoNet

Bangor-based Penobscot Community Health Care has become the latest member of Maine’s health information exchange, HealthInfoNet. As part of HealthInfoNet, PCHC will be able to share patient health information like drug allergies, prescriptions, medical conditions, and lab and test results electronically with other providers in Maine.

PCHC has more than 50,000 patients, and joins other Bangor-area health care organizations Eastern Maine Medical Center and St Joseph’s Hospital in becoming part of HealthInfoNet, according to a press release from PCHC. PCHC, a nonprofit, provides outpatient health care services to those on MaineCare, and Medicare. It operates 14 clinics that employ about 180 full- and part-time clinicians

In the release, PCHC officials said the use of an electronic system like HealthInfoNet should reduce medical mistakes, improve care and lower health care costs.

HealthInfoNet’s system links information from separate health care sites to create a single electronic health record for individual patients, according to a press release. It hopes to connect all health care providers to its system by 2015.
