A Biddeford packaging manufacturer is expanding operations to newly renovated industrial space in Sanford and expects to hire 20 employees within the coming year.
Derek Volk, owner and CEO of Volk Packaging Corp., announced the company plans to establish a new division — Volk Pack — and set up shop later this spring at One Eagle Drive in Sanford.
“We are really pleased with the facility location and the extensive preparatory work completed on the building by developer 43 North,” Volk said in a news release. “We are hoping to provide some Sanford area folks with good stable work."
Volk Packaging makes corrugated and foam products, and is a third-generation family business founded in 1967. It currently employs over 100 people.
Volk Pack will handle business-to-business and business-to-consumer fulfillment, repackaging and prepackaging assembly, including for medical supplies. Volk Pack anticipates having around 20 workers on site in Sanford immediately, and could make as many as 20 additional hires in the next year.
Much of the space will be used as a warehouse for Volk Packaging, but there is also potential to use some of the new building for manufacturing overflow, as the company will lease about 90% of the available square footage.
One Eagle Drive was redeveloped by 43 North, a Scarborough industrial real estate company that focuses on the redevelopment and management of large-scale industrial properties. The 95,000-square-foot manufacturing and warehouse building, located across from the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, is the developer’s latest project, according to its website.
The space includes 11,000 square feet of office and 84,000 square feet of 15-foot-high warehouse and manufacturing space.
The Sanford Regional Economic Growth Council and city officials worked with 43 North developers Jesse and Bradley Abbott “for many months to modernize and market One Eagle, an underutilized industrial site,” said the council’s executive director, Jim Nimon.
“We’re really proud of the work we accomplished together, and especially the end result of bringing a significant regional company to the site,” Nimon said.
Derek Volk is a 2015 Mainebiz NEXT List honoree. Volk Packaging was named the Biddeford/Saco Chamber of Commerce “Large Business of the Year” for 2020.

The company has been on a steady growth trajectory for the past 12 years, according to Derek Volk’s blog. Customers range from Fortune 500 companies to mom-and-pop operations.
In 2019, Volk Packaging made about 50 million boxes and had $33 million in sales. The company’s growth has been about 8% per year since 2009, largely due to a strong New England customer base. In January, Volk had its largest single shipping day in company history.
